Study shows scented cleaners generate invisible nanoparticle pollution indoors
Researchers at Purdue demonstrated that using scented cleaning products in a small model house creates billions of ultra-fine particles that can reach deep into the lungs.
In a study slated for presentation at the American Chemical Society’s fall meeting, Purdue University scientists examined the air quality effects of scented cleaning agents inside a tiny model home. By applying both traditional scented products and those based on botanical essential oils, they observed that volatile fragrance molecules react instantly with indoor air to generate nanoparticles as small as 1 nanometer. Within minutes of mopping, spraying, or wiping, the environment filled with billions to trillions of these ultra-fine particles, which are small enough to bypass standard home air monitors and enter the lower respiratory tract.
The researchers noted that indoor terpene concentrations during cleaning can be tens to hundreds of times higher than those found in a forest, accelerating particle formation. They also found that using germicidal UV-C lamps may increase ozone levels, further amplifying nanoparticle creation. Lead investigator Brandon Boor suggested that clean air should be odorless and advised consumers to choose low-fragrance or fragrance-free cleaners and to improve ventilation by opening windows or running exhaust fans while cleaning.
