Study warns all 110 French national monuments face severe climate threats by 2050

An unprecedented study by the Centre des monuments nationaux reveals that every one of its 110 French heritage sites will be markedly vulnerable to climate change by 2050. The analysis predicts that 80 % of the monuments will endure more than 30 days of conditions conducive to wildfires, while 52 % face moderate to severe clay swelling that could undermine structural foundations. All sites are expected to be strongly impacted by heat and water extremes, and eight coastal properties—including Georges Clemenceau’s house in Vendée—risk total submersion, with full inundation anticipated around 2120.

Mission chief Abla Benmiloud-Faucher outlines adaptation strategies, referencing a heat-wave plan set for implementation before summer 2025 that includes shade structures, greening and water fountains. Additional innovative measures are slated for development by 2030. The findings were highlighted during the European Heritage Days, underscoring the urgency of protecting both monuments and visitors from rising temperatures.
