In the inaugural MMA competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Suchika Tariyal of India advanced to the semifinals by beating Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women's Traditional Mixed Martial Arts 60kg quarterfinal. The win secures India its first medal of the Games, as both losing semifinalists receive bronze. Tariyal, 36, has a diverse combat-sport background, having competed in judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, kurash at the 2023 Asian Games, and winning a Jiu-Jitsu world title in 2024.
After stepping away from sport, she returned to competition encouraged by friends and chose to focus on MMA, despite a knee injury. Her composed performance in the quarterfinal kept control throughout, preventing the 92nd-ranked Mongolian opponent from advancing. She will fight again on Monday for a chance to add to her medal tally, though the bronze is already assured.
