Sudan Gurung travels to New Delhi for BIMSTEC's inaugural home ministers' security meeting

Home Minister Sudan Gurung arrived in New Delhi for the first BIMSTEC gathering of home ministers, marking his initial foreign trip since taking office.

Sudan Gurung, newly appointed Home Minister, left for India on Monday to join his counterparts from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand at the first BIMSTEC home ministers' security conference in New Delhi. The meeting, set for Tuesday, follows a preparatory gathering of home secretaries from the same seven nations. An official familiar with the agenda said the ministers will discuss topics recommended by earlier meetings of home secretaries and national security advisers.

BIMSTEC, founded in 1997, held its fourth summit in Kathmandu in August 2018, where leaders pledged to strengthen coordination among law-enforcement, intelligence and security agencies. This ministerial session seeks to translate those pledges into concrete action. Gurung's trip also represents his first official overseas visit since assuming the home ministry portfolio.

Why it matters

The talks could shape security cooperation across South and Southeast Asia, affecting regional stability and crime-fighting efforts.
