Sudanese anti-war coalition urges immediate humanitarian truce and civilian-led peace talks

Sudanese civilian and political groups demanded an unconditional humanitarian cease-fire and a Sudan-led peace process after meeting the African Union’s Quintet in Addis Ababa.

In Addis Ababa, a delegation of Sudanese civilian and political organisations, featuring former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, met the African Union’s high-level Quintet to discuss ending the war that began in April 2023. The coalition issued a statement demanding an immediate, unconditional humanitarian truce to protect civilians and enable aid, while insisting the peace process be led by Sudanese actors. Their proposal outlined three parallel tracks - a temporary cease-fire, humanitarian assistance, and a broad political dialogue addressing the conflict’s root causes and a democratic transition.

They called for the exclusion of the National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement and related groups, and urged regional and global mediators to coordinate under a single framework that includes the Quad, Quintet and Troika. The groups also pressed for an expanded arms embargo, cessation of external support, and accountability for war crimes, emphasizing Sudan’s territorial integrity and the goals of the December Revolution.

Why it matters

A cease-fire and inclusive peace plan could halt the deadly Sudan conflict and alleviate a massive humanitarian crisis.
