Sudanese army finds mass grave of 25 in Kurmuk, blames RSF for killings

In the town of Kurmuk, southeastern Blue Nile State, Sudanese armed forces uncovered a mass grave holding a minimum of 25 corpses during sweep operations after retaking the area. Commissioner Abdel Aty Mohamed al-Faki reported that the interred included children, women and staff from a local hospital, and that the executions appeared to have taken place near Jebel Fankat, a hilltop previously used by the Rapid Support Forces to launch drone attacks.

The RSF, which has been engaged in conflict with the army since April 2023, has not issued a comment on the allegations. The discovery adds to a pattern of alleged RSF mass killings in Khartoum, el-Fasher and Gezeira state, and comes as the militia continues drone assaults in Blue Nile State. Ongoing battles also persist in West Darfur, where government forces repelled RSF attacks near Bir Saliba, about 40 km from el-Geneina. The war has claimed an estimated 40,000 lives and displaced more than 14 million people, according to the World Health Organization.
