Sudden Cloudburst Triggers Deadly Floods in Nepal’s Rasuwa, Prompting High Alerts
At least eight people were killed and several are missing after a sudden cloudburst caused the Bhotekoshi River to surge, flooding Rasuwa district and spilling into Tibet.
A sudden cloudburst on Wednesday caused the Bhotekoshi River to rise sharply, killing at least eight people and leaving several others missing as floodwaters inundated Timure and the market area of Syafrubesi in Rasuwa district, close to the China border. Chinese state media said the flooding also produced major casualties in Tibet. District officials, including chief district officer Narendra Pariyar and assistant chief Dhruva Prasad Adhikari, described extensive damage to homes, a newly built bridge and customs-stored goods.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority urged residents of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan and Gorkha to stay on high alert. The Prime Minister’s Office deployed army troops, armed police and police units, and dispatched two helicopters and an MI-17 equipped with a medical rescue team to assist in search and relief operations. The full scale of destruction remains under assessment, and authorities continue to gather damage reports.
