Sugar Ray Leonard's son Daniel arrested on nitrous oxide and drug charges
Daniel Leonard, 25, was taken into custody in Santa Monica after police found a nitrous-oxide tank and other controlled substances on him.
Santa Monica officers detained Daniel Leonard, the 25-year-old son of boxing icon Sugar Ray Leonard, after observing him and another man with an inflated balloon and a large cylindrical container that turned out to be a nitrous-oxide tank. When approached, the companion tried to hide the balloon while Leonard concealed the tank, leading to both being arrested for possession of nitrous oxide with intent to inhale. A subsequent search uncovered methamphetamine, MDMA, alprazolam and dextroamphetamine, resulting in four misdemeanor charges: unlawful nitrous-oxide possession, MDMA, alprazolam and dextroamphetamine.
Leonard is slated to appear in court on Oct. 12. This incident follows a May 20 arrest in Los Angeles for violating a temporary restraining order that his father had obtained after an alleged violent episode. Ray Leonard described his son’s behavior as a long-standing addiction that endangers the family. No comment was received from Daniel or his representatives.
