Sultan Nazrin warns of moral decline amid hostile public debates in Malaysia

At the 75th session of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah highlighted a growing crisis of adab within the Malay community and the broader Muslim ummah, noting that debates are increasingly marked by hostility and misinformation. He cautioned that the erosion of ethical conduct threatens the moral fabric of society and called for disciplined listening, careful verification, and respectful engagement.

The Sultan linked the principles of shura—mutual consultation—with adab, stressing that differing views must be managed with courtesy and wisdom. He warned that freedom of speech should not be used as a shield for insults, accusations, or slander. According to the Sultan, upholding adab fosters harmonious decision-making, just leadership, and a mature society. He also stressed that adab extends beyond manners to include respect for knowledge, teachers, and the natural world.
