Sultan Sharafuddin credits Selangor's people for 25-year reign and warns of lingering flood woes

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah praised the contributions of Selangor's residents during his Silver Jubilee, while noting unresolved flooding and cleanliness problems.

During celebrations of his Silver Jubilee, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah reflected on a quarter-century of leadership, attributing Selangor's prominence to the efforts of its native residents and migrants from other states. He described the state as a leading centre for commerce, education and innovation while preserving cultural and religious heritage. The Sultan emphasized that true strength lies in the people, not just economic indicators, and praised youth achievements and communal solidarity.

However, he expressed dissatisfaction with persistent flooding and inadequate cleanliness, citing frequent citizen complaints that he forwards to the menteri besar's office. He also warned that neighbouring states such as Johor and Penang are becoming healthy competitors. The ruler called for responsible, humble leadership focused on serving the public and safeguarding future generations.

Why it matters

The speech underscores how Selangor's development relies on its people and highlights ongoing local service challenges.
