Negotiations among IU, Movimiento Sumar, Más Madrid and the Comuns to relaunch the Sumar alliance have stalled, leaving both the coalition’s name and its prospective leader undecided. Initially intended to be announced before the summer recess, the parties now point to September as a key month, yet no concrete date has emerged, with some insiders suggesting a slip into October. Sources attribute the delay to the Ceuta migration crisis, which is consuming political attention and hindering internal discussions.
Podemos has floated the idea of open primaries to select a unified left-wing candidate, a move that the other Sumar parties have not dismissed. Candidates like Ernest Urtasun are being floated, while figures such as Pablo Bustinduy, Mónica García, and Sira Rego have either refused the role or announced they will not run. Efforts to find an external leader have also faltered, with union chief Unai Sordo and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau both rejecting political bids, and ERC spokesperson Gabriel Rufián being effectively ruled out.
