Sumar seeks amendment to elevate grandchildren law instruction to statutory level
Sumar will file an amendment to give the instruction on the grandchildren law the force of a norm, aiming to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that it says deprives Spaniards of voting rights.
Sumar intends to register an amendment to one outlet education legislation that would elevate the instruction on the so-called grandchildren law to the rank of a formal norm. The proposal, presented by Enrique Santiago, aims to render ineffective a Supreme Court judgment that he claims infringes constitutional rights by denying Spaniards the vote. Santiago explained that the amendment would alter an additional clause of the law to presume exile status for Spaniards who emigrated between the mid-1930s and mid-1950s. By giving the instruction legal weight, Sumar hopes to end disputes over its validity and protect voting rights.
The party may also introduce the same change in other pending bills with sufficient normative rank. This effort follows the Supreme Court’s suspension of registrations in the absentee electoral census pending consular verification of exile descent.
