Sumbawa district head urges stricter monitoring after mining accident kills three

During an on-site inspection of the Lawang Tuwa mining zone, district head Jarot emphasized the need for strict enforcement of the ban on illegal mining, noting that livelihoods must not endanger public safety or the environment. He warned that mining should only proceed with proper permits, safety standards and environmental safeguards. The tragedy on September 5 involved a rock and soil collapse that buried miners, resulting in three deaths—one on the spot and two later at Lantung Community Health Center—and six injuries.
Police have cordoned off the area, secured equipment and are questioning witnesses as part of their investigation. Jarot, accompanied by the regional secretary and legislative deputies, urged subdistrict and village officials, security forces and locals to maintain vigilant monitoring so that mining does not resume covertly. He reiterated that natural resources must be managed legally and responsibly, with profit never outweighing human lives.
