SumUp launches £30 handheld card reader for casual market sellers
SumUp introduced a £30 portable payment device that lets market stall owners accept card, contactless and mobile-wallet payments without a monthly fee.
SumUp has released a low-cost payment terminal aimed at occasional sellers such as car-boot traders, craft-fair vendors and holiday-market participants. Priced at £30, the Solo Lite pairs with a smartphone over Bluetooth and operates through the free SumUp Business app, allowing sellers to input amounts and accept chip-and-PIN, contactless cards and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. The device carries no monthly subscription; instead, each transaction incurs a 1.69% fee.
Its palm-sized form factor and all-day battery life are designed for on-the-go use. In addition, SumUp provides a Tap-to-Pay solution that lets users accept contactless payments directly from a compatible phone without purchasing a separate reader. The offering targets small-scale entrepreneurs looking to broaden payment options beyond cash.
Why it matters
It gives informal traders an affordable way to accept modern card payments, potentially increasing sales at small markets.
