Sun Pharma to launch roughly $1 billion rupee bond issue to replace Organon bridge loan

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries plans to raise about 100 billion rupees through a domestic bond sale to refinance the short-term loan used for its purchase of Organon & Co.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries intends to raise roughly 100 billion rupees (about $1.04 billion) by selling short-term rupee bonds to replace a bridge loan taken for its acquisition of U.S. healthcare firm Organon & Co. The bridge, an 18-month facility close to $12 billion, was syndicated earlier with participation from State Bank of India. The new issuance will feature maturities of two, three and four years, allowing the company to lock in borrowing costs ahead of any Reserve Bank of India rate increase.

This move reflects a broader trend among Indian corporates shifting to domestic debt as rising U.S. yields push up the cost of dollar-denominated financing. About $3 billion of rupee debt is slated for issuance in the coming days, underscoring the tightening of local funding markets.

Why it matters

It shows Indian firms moving to local financing as global borrowing costs rise, affecting capital markets and corporate debt strategies.
