Super League receives confidential investment proposal from Australian Rugby League Commission
Super League has been told that the Australian Rugby League Commission has put forward an investment offer, with details kept private.
Super League confirmed that its 14 member clubs were informed on Thursday of an investment offer from the Australian Rugby League Commission, though the proposal's particulars remain confidential. Negotiations between the two organisations have been in progress since the previous year, with Rugby League commercial noting the discussions are encouraging. NRL chairman Peter V'landys previously warned that Super League could face a "crash" without new revenue streams, while NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo rejected fears that any deal would turn the league into a talent feeder.
Rhodri Jones, head of RL Commercial, said the NRL is a natural partner and highlighted the importance of maintaining UK representation in any governance structure. Leeds Rhinos chairman Paul Caddick has publicly warned against the league being "swallowed up" by external investors.
Why it matters
The proposal could reshape the financial and governance landscape of top-level rugby league in the UK and Europe.
