Supreme Court affirms life term for father who killed son with homemade gun
South Korea's Supreme Court confirmed a life sentence for a 63-year-old man convicted of murdering his 33-year-old son with a self-made firearm at a birthday party.
A Seoul-based Supreme Court ruling on Wednesday finalized a life imprisonment for a 63-year-old man who fatally shot his 33-year-old son with a homemade gun during a birthday celebration in Incheon last year. The court also affirmed convictions for attempted murder of four other relatives, including the victim's spouse and two grandchildren, and for breaching firearms control regulations. Prosecutors indicated the defendant had plotted the attack beginning in August 2024 after his former wife and son stopped providing him with financial aid, and that he was plagued by a delusion of being isolated by them.
The incident, which took place in July 2025, left the son dead and the others wounded. In addition to the life term, the judgment mandates the use of an electronic monitoring bracelet for twenty years should the offender ever be released.
Why it matters
The ruling highlights South Korea's strict gun laws and the judiciary's response to severe family-based violence.
