Supreme Court Bar Association urges chief justice to intervene in lawyers' detention
The Supreme Court Bar Association asked Chief Justice Surya Kant to find out where detained advocates are and to secure their legal aid.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) sent a letter on Saturday, signed by Honorary Secretary Pragya Baghel, urging Chief Justice Surya Kant to engage with authorities about the location and welfare of advocates detained amid protests in Delhi. The SCBA resolution highlighted serious worry over the reported police actions and demanded that any lawyer held without lawful cause be freed promptly. It also called for an examination of the alleged excessive force and appropriate legal action.
The letter was accompanied by a resolution condemning the treatment of the lawyers. The appeal came as the Cockroach Janta Party's planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar prompted heightened security measures. Chief Justice Surya Kant has since spoken with officials, and detained lawyers are being released, after the SCBA, SCAORA and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed him.
