Supreme Court directs MMRDA to lodge Rs 646 crore in Reliance dispute

The Supreme Court ordered the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to deposit Rs 646 crore with the court in a case involving Reliance Industries.

The apex court issued a notice to Reliance Industries and directed the MMRDA to place Rs 646 crore in its registry, following a challenge to a Bombay High Court order that had cancelled a Rs 1,116-crore claim against the company. The High Court had previously instructed a refund of the same amount after Reliance paid it as an additional premium penalty. The Supreme Court will hear MMRDA’s plea against Reliance and other parties on November 18.

Why it matters

The ruling could affect billions of rupees in liabilities and set a precedent for large infrastructure contracts in India.
