Supreme Court dismisses FIRs against NEET protestors, orders compensation
The Supreme Court nullified all FIRs filed against students who demonstrated over the NEET paper leak and instructed the government to compensate families of those who died by suicide.
The Supreme Court, with Chief Justice Surya Kant heading the panel, annulled every FIR lodged against students involved in the Cockroach Janta Party's demonstrations over the alleged NEET exam paper leak between July 20 and 25. In the same order, the Court directed the Centre to disburse compensation within three months to the families of students who committed suicide during the agitation. Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, praised the decision as "absolute justice" and expressed gratitude to the judges for fulfilling the protestors' demands.
He also issued an apology to the bereaved families, attributing the deaths to governmental and systemic shortcomings. Dipke urged the authorities to ensure no future student loses life due to similar failures. The protests, which started at Jantar Mantar on June 20 and later saw clashes with police in Delhi, demanded the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who eventually stepped down, leading to the movement's conclusion on July 25.
