Supreme Court frees 105-year-old murder convict to live with family

India's Supreme Court ordered the permanent release of 105-year-old Rasik Mandal, who had been serving a life sentence for a 1988 murder.

The apex court ruled that the centenarian should spend his remaining days with his relatives, ending his incarceration. Mandal, born in 1920, was convicted in 1994 for a homicide that occurred in 1988. The bench questioned his health and the necessity of continued detention before granting the order. His earlier appeal to the court had been denied in 2019.

Why it matters

The ruling highlights humanitarian considerations in the justice system for elderly inmates.
