Supreme Court justice who jailed Bolsonaro faces resignation calls over banker ties

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years, is under pressure to step down after documents linked him to disgraced banker Daniel Vorcaro.

Documents obtained by Justice André Mendonça reveal that Daniel Vorcaro, the owner of Banco Master, consulted Justice Alexandre de Moraes on several occasions, with investigators believing the justice’s advice influenced Vorcaro’s actions. The banker thanked de Moraes in unreadable messages and referenced the exchanges in other communications. The scandal has prompted calls from figures such as Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and other candidates for de Moraes to leave the bench or face Senate impeachment.

Lawyers for de Moraes’ wife argue the justice only reviewed a public contract to avoid conflicts of interest and never ruled on cases involving Vorcaro. The Supreme Court has yet to decide whether to open a formal investigation, a matter that will be overseen by Chief Justice Luiz Edson Fachin.

Why it matters

The controversy threatens the credibility of Brazil's highest court and could influence upcoming elections.
