Supreme Court orders detailed case filings on Unitech directors to speed trials

In a Wednesday hearing, the Supreme Court ordered the Enforcement Directorate and Delhi Police to furnish detailed information on every case pending against the directors of the financially troubled Unitech Ltd, stressing the need for an expedited trial that does not inconvenience the roughly 22,000 affected homebuyers. Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan warned that the accused should not be granted additional leeway and announced the establishment of a special court to handle these matters exclusively.

The bench queried the destination of homebuyers' deposits and called on agencies to locate any funds that may have been moved abroad. It noted that criminal prosecutions are split between the ED and the Economic Offences Wing, which has filed charge sheets in 63 separate matters. The court also reminded state authorities to cooperate fully and avoid hindering the completion of stalled housing projects, referencing earlier orders that facilitated loan disbursements and granted the Centre-appointed board authority to manage Unitech’s assets.
