Supreme Court rejects appeals, upholds suspended sentences for Victor Micula's son and former officer

Romania's Supreme Court dismissed the cassation appeals of Viorel Micula's son and ex-police officer Camelia-Maria Erdei, keeping their suspended sentences intact.

In a decisive ruling, Romania's Supreme Court of Cassation rejected the cassation petitions submitted by Viorel Micula's son and former police officer Camelia-Maria Erdei, thereby maintaining the appellate court's earlier judgment. The court also ordered each of them to cover 300 lei in judicial expenses. The case originated from accusations that the son accessed the Ministry of Internal Affairs' police databases with assistance from the former officer, leading to suspended prison sentences and a requirement to perform 120 days of community work.

The appellate court had previously reduced the son's prison term to a suspended three-year sentence, citing minimal impact on protected legal values. The former officer's sentence was also suspended, while two other police officers involved were ultimately acquitted.

Why it matters

The ruling confirms judicial handling of high-profile cyber-crime cases involving influential individuals in Romania.
