Supreme Court Sets Agenda for Free Speech and Lobster-Tracker Cases
The Court will hold a closed-door conference to sort through thousands of petitions, including high-profile First Amendment disputes and a challenge to Maine’s lobster-tracker law.
Supreme Court justices will meet in Washington on Monday for a confidential conference aimed at narrowing the thousands of petitions that have accumulated since the previous term’s final opinion day on June 30. The session will address a range of contentious issues, from a California dispute over leaf-letting on private shopping-center property to a Michigan school’s ban on "Let’s Go Brandon" sweatshirts and a challenge to California’s mandated implicit bias training for physicians.
Another petition questions whether Maine’s requirement that lobstermen install GPS trackers on their boats infringes the Fourth Amendment. While the Court is likely to dismiss most requests, it may forward several cases to the upcoming oral-argument calendar, with decisions expected by June 2027.
