Supreme Court urges government to ease Delhi road and metro shutdowns
The Supreme Court cautioned against halting transport in Delhi, asking authorities to revisit road closures and metro restrictions that affect commuters from the NCR.
In a hearing, the Supreme Court highlighted the severe impact of recent road and Delhi Metro shutdowns on commuters from Gurugram, Greater Noida and other NCR regions, noting that many lack private vehicles. The Chief Justice warned that a complete halt of transport is unacceptable and called for "free flow" of traffic. He ordered the government to reassess the road closures and urged a more selective approach.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta pledged to consult the government on the proposed measures and suggested they could be adjusted based on developments. The court affirmed law-enforcement's right to regulate movement but instructed them to identify only essential restrictions, ensuring traffic continues unimpeded.
