Supreme Court warns Gurugram of infrastructure collapse, contrasts with Greater Noida planning
The Supreme Court said Gurugram’s drainage and sewage systems fail during rain due to lack of investment, while Greater Noida was designed for the next 30-40 years.
While hearing a petition challenging Karnataka’s Premium Floor Area Ratio scheme, the Supreme Court observed that Gurugram’s urban infrastructure, especially drainage and sewage, collapses during monsoon because no new investment has been made. Chief Justice Surya Kant contrasted this with Greater Noida, which was planned for the next three to four decades. The bench stressed that additional construction capacity must be matched by upgrades to roads, sewers and public transport.
The petition also questioned if the Premium FAR scheme could legalise unauthorised structures, a point the state denied, insisting existing regulations still apply. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the scheme’s revenue would fund civic projects and that the extra FAR is capped at 0.6. The court gave Bengaluru authorities four weeks to respond to the challenge.
