Surat health officials close restaurant after child death and food poisoning cases

The Surat Municipal Corporation’s health department shut down a local eatery after a child died and three others were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning.

After a family reported food-related illness, Surat’s municipal health team inspected a restaurant on Tuesday and found multiple perishable items in poor condition, such as spoiled chana dal, slightly degraded vegetables left uncovered, and exposed paneer. All of these foods were ordered destroyed. The family had purchased the items on August 15, after which a child died and three other members required hospital care.

Although the exact source of the poisoning has not yet been identified, the health department announced that the restaurant owner will be prosecuted under the Food Safety Act. This action comes shortly after a late-night citywide inspection campaign that examined 1,170 venues, destroyed 376 kg of inedible food, penalised 616 violators and issued 135 notices for hygiene breaches. Further investigation is pending.
