Survey Shows 60% of Millennials Feel Their Money Image Mismatches Reality

A new study finds that three-in-five millennials say the way they present their finances does not match their actual situation.

Talker Research, commissioned by Chime, carried out three online surveys between late May and early June 2026, polling 2,000 millennials alongside smaller samples of Gen X and baby boomers. The findings reveal that 61% of millennials perceive a disconnect between their desired financial image and reality, compared with lower percentages in older cohorts. Only 19% of millennials claim they do not project a financial persona, versus 33% of Gen X and 42% of baby boomers.

Respondents indicated a strong preference for flexibility, with 19% choosing experiences over savings, another 19% taking side-hustles, and 16% preferring to rent for mobility. Additionally, 67% have made trade-offs to fund travel or experiences, and a majority report using digital tools to manage money. Brittney Castro of Chime argues the data disproves stereotypes of millennials being financially irresponsible.

Why it matters

The study challenges common myths about millennials' money habits and shows a shift toward flexible, experience-focused financial choices.
