Survey Shows Majority of Workers Want Outdoor Lunch Breaks for Better Mood

A study of 2,000 hybrid employees finds most prefer eating lunch outdoors, linking it to higher happiness scores.

Talker Research, commissioned by Wild Planet, polled 2,000 hybrid employees to explore lunchtime practices. More than half (56%) said they remain inside throughout the workday, and 85% occasionally forgo a lunch break altogether. Despite this, 78% expressed a desire to dine outdoors on most workdays, and 91% consider a lunch break essential.

When workers ate lunch outside, their self-reported happiness increased from 51% to 66%. Participants believe fresh air (64%) and stepping away from screens (58%) help restore concentration. Yet many still spend the majority of their lunch time on devices, with 61% glued to phones or laptops. Outside work, 67% are making a conscious effort to spend more time outdoors.
