Survivor testifies about chaotic scene after Tempi train collision

Aristeidis Karatzounis, a passenger in the second carriage, gave testimony describing the impact, injuries and subsequent fire at the Tempi crash.

The trial concerning the Tempi train accident opened with the testimony of Aristeidis Karatzounis, who was seated in the second passenger carriage. He said the train slammed into the other unit, causing an abrupt brake that threw him forward, after which he lost consciousness. He awoke in a field, describing a sensation of spinning and an inability to get up, eventually falling again when he tried.

Karatzounis reported seeing a small fire ignite and expand slowly while hearing the first shouts of people around him. He managed to climb onto the old national road with assistance, navigating through the debris of the commercial train before being transported by EKAB ambulance to the University Hospital of Larissa, where doctors documented head trauma and other injuries. When questioned about the train's position after departing Larissa station, he could not recall any specific stance.

He also mentioned lingering smells of burnt metal and plastic. The session will continue with further statements from other victims and relatives of the deceased.
