Survivors of Oct. 7 attack share harrowing captivity details at UN ceremony
Former hostage Eliya Cohen and his wife Ziv Abud recounted their ordeal during a UN commemoration, while U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz praised Cohen’s refusal to aid Hamas propaganda.
At a United Nations ceremony marking three years since the Oct. 7 Hamas assault, survivor Eliya Cohen spoke about his 505-day captivity, noting he was chained, denied food, water, showers and sleep, and subjected to nightly terror. His newlywed wife, Ziv Abud, recounted surviving the Nova music festival massacre, hiding in an overcrowded bomb shelter, and witnessing the deaths of her nephew and his girlfriend. U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz, after meeting the couple privately, became visibly emotional as he recalled Hamas’s attempts to force Cohen to record a propaganda video, which Cohen refused twice.
Other witnesses, including visual intelligence observer Oriya Berlin, shared their experiences of the attack and subsequent military response. Waltz used the platform to stress the strategic fallout for Iran and its proxies and to affirm U.S. support for Israel. Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon criticized the UN for what he sees as demonizing Israel, linking the debate to personal family ties in the IDF.
