Suspect Arrested After Arson Attempt on Wuppertal Synagogue
Police detained a suspect following an arson attack on the Wuppertal synagogue that caused minor property damage but no injuries.
A suspect was taken into custody after attempting to burn the side entrance of the Wuppertal synagogue belonging to the Jüdischen Kultusgemeinde Wuppertal. The attacker hurled multiple bags containing a combustible liquid, igniting a small fire that was put out within minutes by members of the congregation, limiting damage to a low level. Police reported that no individuals were injured.
Josef Schuster, president of the Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland, expressed deep disturbance, linking the incident to a broader trend of normalising anti-Jewish hatred and recalling similar attacks in Sydney, Manchester and Halle. He warned that the upcoming high-holiday of Yom Kippur could be a target and urged authorities to ensure security for worshippers. The case follows a previous arson attempt on the same synagogue in 2014.
