Suspected Coconut Cartel member detained after 11-year-old fatally shot in Sydney apartment

Police arrested 18-year-old Reece Fakhr, linked to the Coconut Cartel, after finding evidence on a phone left at the scene where an 11-year-old boy was shot in the face.

In a northwest Sydney flat, an 11-year-old boy was shot in the face while handling an illegal firearm, later dying in hospital. Police say a phone left at the scene contained data linking the incident to Reece Fakhr, an 18-year-old alleged member of the organized Coconut Cartel. Strike-force detectives and the Australian Federal Police arrested Fakhr at Sydney International Airport as he tried to flee Australia.

He has been charged with ten offences, ranging from conspiracy to murder and kidnapping to arson and possession of an encrypted criminal device. Three other men were arrested at the apartment; Isaac Bechara, 18, faces a charge of concealing a serious indictable offence, while two others were released without charge. Fakhr was refused bail and his next hearing is set for December 8 at Sydney Downing Centre Local Court.

Why it matters

The arrest highlights law-enforcement efforts against a violent organised crime network linked to a fatal shooting of a child.
