Suspected Islamist militants kill 15 in pre-dawn raid on Cameroon village
Around 2 a.m., unidentified gunmen attacked Madegoua near Makary in northern Cameroon, leaving at least 15 dead.
In the early hours of Thursday, unidentified militants stormed the village of Madegoua, close to Makary in Cameroon’s Far North, tying up men before shooting them. A local vigilante said 13 people were killed on the spot and two additional victims later died of injuries at a Makary hospital, raising the death toll to 15. Video showed burials, though independent verification was not possible.
No organization immediately claimed responsibility, but security analysts suspect Islamic State West Africa Province, active in the Lake Chad basin. Some villagers believe the assault enforced a prior order to vacate the settlement, which sits on a key route to Makary. The attack underscores the persistent instability in the border region, where Boko Haram and other Islamist groups have challenged a multinational force fighting militants around Lake Chad.
