Last Saturday a small fishing-type motorboat carrying about a dozen suspected migrants landed at a private dock in Newport Harbor, striking a yacht before being abandoned. Witnesses reported the men exiting the vessel and boarding two waiting cars on Edgewater Place, then speeding away, leaving neighbors alarmed. Federal agents, alerted by a 911 caller, seized the boat and are searching for video evidence, with only one low-quality clip publicly available.
The event echoes earlier Coast Guard interceptions of migrant boats west of Newport and near San Clemente Island, highlighting a pattern of sea-based smuggling. Newport Beach City Council member Erik Weigand cited the high volume of pleasure craft as a possible cover for traffickers and urged installation of security cameras at the harbor entrance.
