Suspension bridge collapses during inauguration after overloaded crossing in West Java

A celebration turned chaotic on August 30 as the newly built Pongpet Suspension Bridge in Pangandaran Regency, West Java, collapsed during its ribbon-cutting ceremony. More than 50 villagers crossed together, surpassing the bridge’s load limit, which caused the left-hand sling rope to detach from its fastener and tilt the structure. The Indonesian Army confirmed that no one was killed, though several participants, including the head of the Pangandaran Regent, Citra Pitriyami, and Public Works official Ling Ling Nugraha Senjaya, sustained minor injuries and abrasions.
Prior safety notices posted by the Pangandaran 0625 Military District Command had been disregarded amid the excitement. While the primary bridge remains standing, the compromised rope is being replaced, and authorities are assessing the overall structural integrity before reopening.
