Suspicious letter forces partial shutdown of LAPD headquarters
A mailroom letter containing an unknown hazardous material prompted evacuation of parts of the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters on Tuesday morning.
Early Tuesday, workers in the Los Angeles Police Department mailroom discovered a letter believed to contain an unidentified hazardous substance and immediately called for assistance. Emergency units, including a hazardous-materials team and fire crews, arrived to secure the area and evacuate the mailroom and adjacent police center. The incident forced the closure of surrounding streets at 100 W. First St., creating congestion in downtown Los Angeles.
Despite the evacuation, the majority of the LAPD headquarters remained operational, and a scheduled Police Commission meeting proceeded as planned. Officials have not disclosed the nature of the material and the investigation is ongoing.
