SUV crashes near Kailash Colony, killing 71-year-old woman and injuring her husband

Around 6.45 pm on Sunday, an SUV navigating the area around Kailash Colony metro station struck an SUV, an autorickshaw and a cycle rickshaw, then rammed a pedestrian couple. The 71-year-old Shashi Bhateja was pronounced dead at Moolchand Hospital, and her husband, 65-year-old Kulbhushan Bhateja, sustained a broken bone and an eye injury but survived. The driver, 59-year-old Tapan Ahir, was apprehended at the scene; investigators are checking for vehicle malfunction and have submitted his blood to the Forensic Science Laboratory for alcohol analysis.

Police noted that after the initial impact the driver accelerated, hitting concrete pillars and uprooting four of them. A legal complaint was lodged under Sections 281, 125(a) and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The incident has left the surviving husband grieving and awaiting further statements.
