Suvendu Adhikari vows new 'love jihad' and 'land jihad' laws and a UCC for West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari pledged to introduce strict legislation against "love jihad" and "land jihad" within six months and said West Bengal will adopt a Uniform Civil Code similar to Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

In a public rally, Suvendu Adhikari promised to pass tough legislation against "love jihad" and "land jihad" within six months, urging citizens to stay united against perceived divisive forces. He further declared that West Bengal will emulate Uttarakhand and Gujarat by introducing a Uniform Civil Code to harmonise marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption laws across religious groups. Adhikari asserted that the state will safeguard temples, monasteries and other cultural sites, rejecting any anti-national actions.

He announced a Rs 1,000 crore religious tourism circuit to be finished in two years and called for public input on the project. The leader also revealed plans for large-scale religious gatherings, including a Hanuman Chalisa recital by 20,000 participants in November and a mass Gita recital involving one million people on December 29, as well as preparations for next year’s Gangasagar Mela with international-standard facilities.

Why it matters

The promises signal major legal and cultural shifts that could affect communal relations and civil law in West Bengal.
