SV leader blasts Labour budget as socially harmful and fiscally skewed

SV chief Kirsti Bergstø denounced the latest Labour budget as containing large regressive cuts and a tax system that widens inequality, urging a fundamental rethink.

In a forceful statement, SV leader Kirsti Bergstø criticized the Labour-led budget for featuring extensive regressive reductions and a tax structure that benefits high earners. She highlighted that the budget’s tax cuts for the richest far exceed those for low-income households, and pointed to specific cuts in child benefits, disability allowances, and support for single parents. Bergstø compared these measures with the more progressive proposals of former Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum, calling the latter a model for redistribution.

She accused Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg of steering the budget toward right-wing compromises and warned that one outlet direction threatens Norway’s social-democratic agenda. Bergstø said the SV will fight hard in the parliamentary negotiations and push for a fundamental overhaul of the budget’s priorities.

Why it matters

The critique signals a major split over fiscal policy that could shape Norway's social welfare and tax system.
