Swan Defence and Heavy Industries secures Rs 1,897 crore tanker contract
Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd (SDHI) won a tender to build four medium-range dual-fuel tankers worth Rs 1,897 crore, outbidding Cochin Shipyard Ltd.
On October 9, a tender for two firm and two optional dual-fuel ready medium-range tankers was awarded to Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd, valued at Rs 1,897 crore. The company quoted around $48.9 million per ship, undercutting Cochin Shipyard Ltd by about $4 million. SDHI’s technical partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries helped secure the deal.
The vessels will each carry 17,000-18,000 tons of cargo and will boost SDHI’s order book, the largest in India by dry-dock capacity. The contract follows SDHI’s 2024 restart under new management and supports a broader government plan to grow the shipbuilding sector with state-backed orders.
Why it matters
The deal strengthens India's shipbuilding capacity and showcases domestic firms competing with state-run yards.
