Sweden braces for Russian troll farms and disinformation ahead of September election

Sweden is preparing for its 13 September parliamentary election amid concerns about Russian information operations. While the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service and other agencies say Moscow does not view the vote as a high-priority target, they caution that hybrid methods—including a pro-Russian troll network on X linked to the Matryoshka operation—are circulating fabricated videos and fraud accusations against Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Election Authority chief Anna Nyqvist said all cyber-threat agencies are cooperating to secure election IT systems. Experts from Frivärld and the Swedish Defence Research Agency argue Russia aims to erode trust in media and institutions, but Sweden's broad political consensus on supporting Ukraine makes the environment less fertile for division. Recent disclosures also revealed a Russian intelligence cell operating in Sweden, underscoring a longer-term strategy to destabilize NATO members. Officials stress vigilance despite the assessment that the election is not a top Russian priority.
