Swedish child crime figures reveal far more youths in gang violence than expected

Sweden's Socialstyrelsen reports that 264 children and young people were prosecuted or tried for serious gang-related violent offenses between 2020 and 2024, far exceeding earlier estimates.

The agency found that one in ten of those offenders is under 15 years old. Earlier projections had anticipated between 150 and 200 youths, but the new data shows a much larger problem. Socialstyrelsen will now examine all 264 cases to identify risk, background and upbringing factors. Department head Johanna Kumlin says the study will also map contacts with various actors to pinpoint where societal support failed.

Why it matters

Understanding why so many minors join gangs can guide policies to protect vulnerable children and reduce serious crime.
