Swedish court upholds stricter citizenship residency rule for long-term residents

The Migration Court in Malmö ruled that a non-EU resident who applied for Swedish citizenship was denied because a new law raised the required residence period to eight years.

A man who has lived in Sweden since 2019 sought citizenship in mid-2025. The Migration Agency rejected his application after a legislative amendment increased the residency requirement. The court noted that the law took effect in June 2026 without a transition clause, reflecting a deliberate policy shift by lawmakers.
