Swedish election faces security crisis as immigration fuels crime concerns, analyst warns
An analyst says rising crime and a large immigrant population are driving Swedes to demand stricter security policies ahead of the vote.
External security remains stable, but Sweden is confronting a deep internal crisis marked by rising crime and integration challenges, according to foreign-policy analyst Ștefan Popescu. The country’s foreign-born share has reached 28%, with 10% originating from the Middle East and Africa, and unemployment is disproportionately high among these groups. Crime levels are reported to be more than double the European average, leading 40% of citizens to feel unsafe.
This perception is fueling a demand for stricter immigration rules and a possible rightward shift in the upcoming election, a pattern also observed in Germany and France. Despite potential domestic political upheaval, Sweden’s foreign commitments, including its NATO role and support for Ukraine, are expected to stay unchanged.
