Swedish Transport Agency Accelerates Start Dates for Five Major Road and Rail Projects

Trafikverket presented a list of ten transport projects it considers ready for construction between 2027 and 2029, with five slated for an earlier start than previously scheduled, according to General Director Roberto Maiorana. The agency has introduced new work methods that permit partial construction to commence before the entire planning phase is finished, a move intended to reduce overall costs and speed up delivery.

Notable early-start projects include a preliminary phase of the four-track Stockholm-Uppsala railway and the construction of a new lock at Lilla Edet as part of the Trollhätte Canal upgrade. Maiorana emphasized that accelerating these initiatives will not push back other projects in the national infrastructure programme and poses no risk to quality. Additionally, Transportstyrelsen is awaiting governmental approval to begin work on extending Murjeks meeting station on the Malmbanan, a component of a long-term rail upgrade. The agency expects the earlier timelines to benefit commuters, particularly those traveling between Uppsala and Stockholm.
