Swimmer Remains in Water as Six Great White Sharks Swim Nearby Off California
A man continued swimming in shallow water between Santa Barbara and Malibu while six great white sharks, including juveniles, swam close by, despite lifeguard warnings.
Drone video recorded by marine documentarian Carlos Gauna, known online as The Malibu Artist, shows a swimmer in shallow water between Santa Barbara and Malibu while six great white sharks, mostly juveniles, swam nearby. Lifeguards tried to warn the swimmer and one officer entered the water, yet the swimmer remained. From the aerial view Gauna could see sharks that the swimmer likely could not, including a juvenile that came within roughly a body length before reversing direction.
Gauna explained that Southern California's shallow coastline serves as a key habitat for young great whites, leading to more frequent but usually harmless encounters with people. He also mentioned that adult sharks up to 13-15 feet are seen in the area regularly. One of the juveniles, nicknamed “Tina,” has become accustomed to human presence without showing aggression, and shark bites in such settings remain exceptionally rare.
