Swindon unveils eco-friendly swing bridge as part of canal revival

A six-metre swing bridge made from recycled-plastic decking has been installed in Wichelstowe, Swindon, advancing the Wilts & Berks Canal restoration.

In Wichelstowe, a six-metre swing bridge called Bushey Fox Bridge has been lifted into place as part of the Wilts & Berks Canal restoration project. Built off-site by EKSPAN and installed by Fox (Owmby) Ltd, the bridge features a deck composed of recycled plastic material, equating to 140 bottles per square metre. It stays closed for walkers, cyclists and tow-path users but can be manually unlocked and swung open on a bearing system when vessels approach, with the deck resting on a purpose-built shelf.

The project, backed by Swindon Borough Council and developer Barratt Developments PLC, also includes widening the canal and creating soft edges to support wildlife such as water voles. Councillor Matty Courtliff highlighted the bridge’s role in enhancing the area's character, while Development Manager Rob Powe noted that further canal work will depend on seasonal weather conditions.

Why it matters

The bridge showcases sustainable design while improving access and navigation on a historic waterway undergoing major redevelopment.
