Swiss AI Researchers Flee to US Tech Giants, Raising Sovereignty Concerns
Top AI talent from ETH Zürich and EPFL Lausanne are increasingly joining US technology companies, prompting worries about Switzerland's digital independence.
Switzerland's premier AI research institutions, ETH Zürich and EPFL Lausanne, are losing a growing share of their top graduates and scientists to US tech giants, including Google, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, OpenAI and Anthropic. These companies support ETH research with multi-million-franc contributions, provide internships and assign mentors to attract talent early in their careers. Andreas Krause, director of the ETH AI Center, says the exodus threatens Swiss digital sovereignty by placing critical AI expertise under foreign control.
Entrepreneur Pascal Kaufmann of Alpine AI describes the trend as a "modern mercenary system" and calls for stricter regulation of university-industry collaborations. The ETH acknowledges the lack of domestic alternatives that can match Big Tech's resources, while the Swiss government has so far offered no concrete measures to curb the brain drain.
Why it matters
The loss of AI experts to US firms could limit Switzerland's ability to shape its own digital future.
